The SUNY Potsdam Julia E. Crane Alumni Board of Trustees recently awarded Toni Grieco Zygadlo of Gouverneur, a member of the Class of 1973, the 2009 Helen M. Hosmer Excellence in Music Teaching Award during the College’s Annual Reunion Weekend.
This award is presented to a person in public school music education who has demonstrated exemplary service in any of the areas of choral, instrumental or general music education. The Julia E. Crane Alumni Association selected Zygadlo to receive this honor in recognition of her commitment to her students and her continuing involvement in the community.
Zygadlo’s leadership as coordinator of the Music Department for 27 years and Jazz Rock Ensemble director for 35 years has left a beautiful legacy of music and choreography that will be remembered by a grateful Indian River School District. Thanks to her tireless dedication, her choral program was perennially established as second to none.
“Toni models professionalism and exemplary leadership with colleagues, administrators, students, parents and the community,” read the citation presented to her. “She impacted many students’ lives by giving them confidence to express themselves. She was able to take daily mundane tasks and turn them into learning experiences that change lives. Her students held a deep and abiding respect for her.”
Zygadlo consistently inspired superior performances from her students as gauged by her concerts, the school musicals, bi-county participation and solo festivals. She is an icon both locally in the public school setting and the overall extended music community in NYSSMA Zone 5, consisting of three counties. She devoted countless hours to community musical events and regularly gives her time and talents to organizations that provide musical opportunities.
