The SUNY Potsdam Alumni Board of Trustees recently awarded Haden A. Land of Bowie, MD, a member of the Class of 1984, the 2009 Minerva Award during the College’s Annual Reunion Weekend.
The prestigious Minerva Award is presented to an alumna or alumnus who has demonstrated outstanding professional achievement. The Alumni Board recognized Land for his impressive accomplishments as vice president, chief technology officer of the civilian agency business within Lockheed Martin’s Information Systems and Global Services in addition to his generosity and deep personal commitment to SUNY Potsdam.
Land has senior technical responsibility for nearly $4 billion annual sales worth of federal civilian agency contracts as one of Lockheed Martin’s senior technical operations executives. His support for their information technology programs involves a team of approximately 8,500 engineers and IT personnel.
Receiving recognition for his many achievements, Land was named one of the “50 Most Important Hispanics in Technology and Business” by “Hispanic Engineer and Information Technology Magazine” in 2008. Most recently in 2009, he was featured as one of the “Tech Leaders You Need to Know.”
Although he manages a demanding career, devoting time to help others remains at the top of his priorities. As an active member of the Computer Science Board of Advisers at SUNY Potsdam, he has helped a number of students secure internships and permanent positions at Lockheed Martin.
In addition to investing his time and expertise, Haden established an endowed scholarship at Potsdam for computer science or math students who have an internship in the aerospace or defense industry. To date, three students were able to complete internships at Lockheed Martin, NASA and the Naval Research Laboratory.
