SUNY Potsdam Honors 1981 & 1986 Bears Basketball Achievements

In recognition of the 25th and 30th anniversaries of the 1981 and 1986 Bears basketball teams’ winning NCAA Division III National Championship titles under Coach Jerry Welsh, the Village of Potsdam, Town of Potsdam and St. Lawrence County have declared the dates of July 14 to July 17, 2011 SUNY Potsdam Men’s Basketball Recognition Days.

The celebration dates will coincide with SUNY Potsdam’s annual Reunion Weekend festivities, when the College plans to mark the milestone championships in a number of ways.

During the Reunion Welcome Reception on Friday, July 15, former Bears basketball Coach Jerry Welsh will be in attendance to celebrate the 25th and 30th anniversaries of the winning 1981 and 1986 teams.

In addition, from the 1986 team, former assistant coaches Stan Cohen, Bob Kuba and Bill Mitchell, and players Andrew Gregoire, Tim Harris, Barry Stanton and Troy Turner will also join Coach Welsh at the ceremony. Representing the 1981 team will be assistant coach Steve Kmack, who worked alongside Welsh and Cohen, as well as 1981 players Scott Franko, Ed Jachim, Waverly Patrick, Derrick Rowland, Maurice Woods and Leroy Witherspoon. County, town and village officials have also been invited to attend the event.

On Saturday, July 16, there will be an official unveiling at 2:30 p.m. of the SUNY Potsdam Men’s Basketball Photo Gallery in the Maxcy Hall Commons, which is located on the second floor of the College’s athletic complex. This gallery, which is made possible by a generous gift from Coach Welsh, will commemorate every Bears basketball team from 1948-49 to the present.

Preparations for SUNY Potsdam’s annual Reunion Weekend, which takes place this weekend, are in high gear. Although registration is required for all events, this year there will be no general registration fee. All SUNY Potsdam alumni and friends are invited to join in the festivities.

The public is invited to attend Reunion Weekend events. For more information or to register for the weekend, please call Laura Stevenson at (315) 267-2120. Registration headquarters will be located in Becky’s Place at Pratt Commons throughout the weekend for walk-ins.
