Get answers at SUNY Potsdam's local government conference

Those in local government seem to regularly face more questions than answers. How do you lobby Albany? What are the positive and negative aspects to consider in the development of wind farm systems and sites? How can alternative energies be explored to save costs to community residents and businesses?

Attending SUNY Potsdam’s 18th annual Local Government Conference on Tuesday, Oct. 13, in Kellas Hall can provide some answers to tackle the challenges often faced by elected and appointed officials.

Designed by local government officials, the conference agenda offers relevant information for local government officials and community members at large. The conference includes 24 in-depth sessions with former New York State Senator Ray Meier serving as the keynote speaker this year.

Whether serving as a county executive, a state senator or a delegate to a national organization of state legislators, Meier has spent decades of his adult life in public service. Never one to shy away from a difficult legislative challenge or hesitate to tackle a controversial topic, Meier has led by example.

Aspiring politicians or anyone interested in public or community service can look to Meier to see what it takes to be dedicated, fair-minded and effective.

While workshops have been designed specifically for assessors, board members, budget and finance officers, code officers, municipal clerks, planning and zoning officials, community development and public works officials, it is open to everyone.

The cost of the conference is $35 for anyone registering through October 3. After October 3, registration is $45. Day-of-the-event registration is $60. Early registration is strongly encouraged.

Registration includes all conference materials, refreshments and lunch. For information regarding the conference, please contact Nancy Hess at SUNY Potsdam at (315) 267-2167 or (315) 267-2538.
