Potsdam Librarian receives national recognition
SUNY Potsdam Librarian Jane M. Subramanian has been honored as one of two winners of the Music Library Association’s national competition titled “Best of Chapters.”
The “Best of Chapters” committee selects just two winners to give their presentations at a national final session in San Diego, CA. Subramanian will be presenting her work titled “The Norwood Brass Firemen Band’s Strong Beat Since the 1870’s” in March 2010.
The competition was created to honor presenters at chapter conferences for their excellent research and to allow a broader sharing of that valuable work.
The Music Library Association’s competition consists of submissions from regional chapters throughout the country. The presentations that are nominated can also be from prior regional conferences.
There are 11 regional chapters that are eligible to submit up to two nominations each. The regional chapters include Atlantic, Greater New York, Midwest, Mountain-Plains, New England, New York State-Ontario, Northern California, Pacific Northwest, Southeast, Southern California and Texas.
Subramanian is a member of SUNY Potsdam’s Class of 1972 and has been part of the faculty for more than 35 years. She manages the College Archives and Special Collections of the library, teaches, provides reference service and serves as a library mentor for honors students. She was instrumental in creating the campus’s Honors Program.
Subramanian has been presented with numerous honors and awards, including the May 2007 Northern New York Library Network Award for Excellence in Library Service. She also received the Chancellor Award for Excellence in Librarianship in May 2005 and the SUNY Potsdam Alumni Board of Trustees’ 2008 Distinguished Service Award.
