Six SUNY Potsdam students strike gold this summer at Nevada and Alaska mines


Six SUNY Potsdam geology students spent their summer interning at gold mines in Alaska and Nevada and getting a first-hand look at the rewards and challenges of working in the mining industry.

Douglas Eck of Attica, Dan Ingersoll of Buffalo, Jake Seller of Saranac and Josh Sovie of Ogdensburg spent three months in Nevada working for Barrick Gold Corp., the largest gold mining company in the world. Garrett Lee of Hopewell Junction and Nathan Peirce of Heuvelton were on duty in Alaska with Hecla Greens Creek Mining Company.

Women’s Soccer Ties Oswego


The women’s soccer team got off to an early 1-0 lead in Friday's home conference game with Oswego before a late second period Laker goal forced the Bears to settle for a tie. Potsdam now moves to 7-2-2 overall (0-2-1 SUNYAC).

Dedra Palmer (Whitesboro/Whitesboro)put the Lady Bears ahead in the first half at 20:53 on an assist from Lacey Malbeuf (Harrisville/Harrisville). Potsdam held the Lakers to one shot in the first half before a second half Laker goal by Laura Ambron (Fishkill/John Jay) tied the game at 74:55. Julie McCloskey (Hopewell Junction/John Jay) had the assist.

Men Lose to Oswego


The men’s soccer team lost to SUNY Oswego 4-0 on the road to drop to 4-6-2 on the season. They are 0-3 in SUNYAC play.

Felipe Cavalcanti scored for Oswego just over five minutes into the game. Mike Roorda, Chris Carra and Ben Peters all scored for the Lakers. German Colazzo and Ben Nix each contributed an assist.

Evan Smith started in goal for the Bears and made seven saves. Matt Wopperer had one save for Oswego.

The Bears stay on the road and play Cortland at 1pm on Saturday

Men Defeated by Cortland


The men’s soccer team lost to SUNY Cortland 3-0 on the road to drop to 4-7-2 on the season. They are now 0-4 in SUNYAC play.

The Red Dragons got on the board quickly almost 90 seconds into the game when Andrew Schwert scored on a loose ball after a corner kick. Kyle Stepannovsky later sent a long shot into the goal following another corner kick. He was assisted by E.J. Reutmann. Mark Gunsch scored the final goal of the game at 54:33 off an assist from Schwert.

Volleyball Wins Two at Hartwick Tournament


The volleyball team picked up two wins at the Hartwick Tournament. In the first match they defeated Old Westbury 25-8, 25-8, 25-14. In the second match against SUNYIT, the Lady Bears won 25-19, 25-18, 25-23. Their overall record is now 12-7 for the season.

It was an all around team effort in both matches. Lisa Wenninger, Meg Welcher, and Sammie Pickering all had four kills against Old Westbury. Courtney Falconer had 24 assists and Diana Murphy had 17 digs.

Women Denied by Cortland


(POTSDAM, NY)- Despite an outstanding effort by the Lady Bears which held the Red Dragons of Cortland to a single tally, the Bears were denied 1-0 in Saturday's home conference contest. Potsdam’s record now goes to 7-3-2 overall (0-3-1 SUNYAC) for the season.

Ashley Mewhorter (Clifton Park/Shenendowa) scored Cortland's only goal at the 16:14 mark in the first half on an assist by Kelsey Allen (Clifton Park/Shenendowa). An opportunity for the the Bears to knot the game failed when Lacey Malbeuf's (Harrisville/Harrisville) late second period connection was ruled offsides.

Volleyball Wins Hartwick Tournament


The volleyball team went a perfect 4-0 for the weekend and won the Hartwick Tournament. It is their first tournament win of the year. In addition, outside hitter Sammie Pickering (Tupper Lake/Tupper Lake) and libero/setter Kim Plummer (Horseheads/Horseheads) were named to the All-Tournament team.

In their first match on Sunday, the Lady Bears defeated Alfred 25-17, 25-22, 25-22. Pickering had 14 kills to lead the team while Plummer had 14. Courtney Falconer (Bayshore/Bayshore) had 31 assists and Diana Murphy (Warwick/Warwick) had 15 digs.

Former Bear Scores NHL Game-Winner


Chris Lee, a SUNY Potsdam All-American now playing with the New York Islanders, scored the game winnning goal last Friday (10/3) night to propel the Islanders to a 3-2 pre-season win over the New Jersey Devils. Lee's tally at 2:28 in overtime also fell on the defensemen's 28th birthday.

While at Potsdam, Lee led his team in both points and assists for three years from 2001-02 to 2003-04. A native of Mactier, Ontario, Lee was also the Bears' goal scoring leader in 2002-03.

Pickering Named Volleyball Player of the Week


Sammie Pickering has been named the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Volleyball Player of the Week. In a dominant weekend for Potsdam, Pickering helped to lead the Bears to four straight wins at the Hartwick Invitational.

Pickering (Tupper Lake/Tupper Lake), a senior outside hitter, was named to the All-Tournament team at Hartwick where she had 43 kills, an overall .387 hitting percentage, and 26 digs. In a 2-3 loss to St. Lawrence University earlier in the week, she had an additional 20 digs and 20 kills.

Golf Finishes Season at Hamilton Invitational


The men’s golf team ended its season at the Hamilton Invitational which was held at the Yahnundasis Golf Club in New Hartford, NY and the Skenandoa Club in Clinton, NY on 10/4 and 10/5. Potsdam finished tied for ninth with Clarkson. A total of 15 schools competed in the event.

Shane Laurie (Canton, NY) had the best individual finish for the Bears. His overall score of 151 put him in a three way tie for 10th place. He shot a +8 which was four shots off of the leader.
