Volleyball Defeats Cortland In Pool Play


The volleyball team upset SUNY Cortland 25-10, 25-23, 25-23 as they hosted the first day of SUNYAC East Pool Play on Friday in Jerry Welsh Gymnasium. The big win marks the first time Potsdam has beaten Cortland since October 26, 1984. The Red Dragons are the current SUNYAC defending champions.

Potsdam leaders included Sammie Pickering (Tupper Lake/Tupper Lake) who had 13 kills and setter Courtney Falconer (Bay Shore/Bay Shore) who tallied 24 assists.

Men Lose To St. Lawrence


The men’s soccer team could not stop the furious Saints offense as they lost to St. Lawrence 7-1.

Potsdam fell behind early 2-0 before scoring just 13 seconds before halftime on a goal by Ryan McAssey (Oceanside/Oceanside). The Saints came out to score three goals within a five and a half minute span including two by Tyler McCune.

Evan Smith (Gansevoort/So. GlenFalls) played 63:03 in goal and made seven saves. DJ Martin (Mechanicville/Mechanicville) came in for the last 26:57 and made one save.

Women Suffer First Soccer Loss


(BROCKPORT, NY) The Lady Bears suffered their first loss on the season as they opened State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) soccer competition against the hosting Brockport Golden Eagles who prevailed 3-2.

Brockport (3-3-1 overall, 2-0 SUNYAC) scored first when they connected on an unassisted goal in the 28th minute of play. The Golden Eagles tallied again at 33:30 while scoring the only first period goals.

Men’s Soccer Plays To a Scoreless Tie


The men’s soccer team had several opportunities to score but could not cash in and instead settled for a scoreless tie against visiting Keuka College.

DJ Martin (Mechanicville/Mechanicville) made four saves in goal for the Bears. Mike Meskill made five saves for Keuka. Potsdam outshot Keuka 13-8 in the game.

The Bears are at home again on Sunday as they take on SUNYIT. Game time is 1 pm.

Golf Second at ECAC Championships


The golf team continued its outstanding play in finishing second at the ECAC Upstate Championships which were held at he Blue Heron Golf Club in Macedon, NY on Saturday and Sunday (9/27 and 9/28). A total of nine teams competed in the event.

The Bears had three players finish in the top 10. Benton Sullivan (Massena, NY) came in second with an overall score of 150. Teammates Shane Laurie (Canton, NY) and Chad Shippee (Corinth, NY) both finished in 10th place with a score of 158.

The team’s final competition of the year is the Hamilton Invitational on 10/4 and 10/5.

Men Soccer Team Fall to Clarkson


The men's soccer team fell behind early and could not recover as they lost to Clarkson 3-1 in a cross-town roadtrip on Friday afternoon.

The Bears scored at 68:35 in the second half on Tim Parks’ (McGraw/McGraw) unassisted goal from 35 yards out. Keeper DJ Martin (Mechanicville/Mechanicville) played 62:00 in goal and had six saves. Reliever Evan Smith (Gansevoort/So. GlenFalls) came in for the last 28 minutes and made two saves.

Volleyball Wins Two on Second Day of SUNYAC Pool Play


(POTSDAM, NY)- The volleyball team continued its impressive play in winning both of their matches on the second day of SUNYAC Pool Play held at Jerry Welsh Gymnasium.

In the first match, the Lady Bears defeated Oneonta 23-25, 25-9, 25-16, 25-22. Sammie Pickering (Tupper Lake/Tupper Lake) had 21 kills to lead the team. Courtney Falconer (Bay Shore/Bay Shore) had 42 assists while Kim Plummer (Horseheads/Horseheads) had 16 digs.

In the second match, Potsdam defeated Plattsburgh 25-19, 25-23, 25-12. Pickering had 12 kills and Falconer had 25 assists.

Volleyball Loses In Five Games


The volleyball team lost a tough five game match to cross-town rival St. Lawrence on Tuesday night 20-25, 25-13, 17-25, 25-15, 13-15.

The Lady Bears were led by Sammie Pickering who had 20 kills and 20 digs. Courtney Falconer had 39 assists and Diana Murphy had 27 digs to lead the team.

Potsdam (10-7) will play next in the Hartwick Invitational this weekend (10/4 and 10/5). They will go against Old Westbury at 6:30 pm and then play SUNYIT at 8:30 on Saturday with matches then continuing on Sunday.

Men Soccer Team Lose to Geneseo


(POTSDAM, NY)- The men’s soccer team lost to Geneseo 6-1 in SUNYAC play on Saturday. Potsdam’s lone goal came from Matt Rudd (Rodman/South Jefferson) at 51:32 off of a corner kick by John McCloskey (Tully/Tully).

Joey Mort (Rochester/McQuaid) had two goals to lead the Blue Knights. Sean Bardenett (Syracuse/Westhill), Judah Manetta (Rochester/Greece Arcadia), and Ryan Stansfield (Wantagh/MacArthur) all had one goal each. One of Geneseo’s goals was an own goal from Potsdam. Geneseo held a 15-4 advantage in shots.

Sept. 21: Sharpen your skates: Fall ice hockey clinics set at SUNY Potsdam


The SUNY Potsdam Center for Regional Research and Community Education is again set to offer four youth ice hockey clinics and one adult clinic during September and October at the Maxcy Hall Ice Arena.

The Skater's Clinic with Tom Broderick is an intense clinic for skaters of all ages and ability levels. It focuses on improving skating techniques to include balance, agility, stride, use of edges and understanding of the game. The clinic is sure to improve the performance of all skaters, whether they are just learning ice hockey or they have played for a number of years.
