KeyBank gives NCSTEP $5,000 grant

KeyBank's Key Foundation recently awarded a $5,000 grant to SUNY Potsdam's North Country Science and Technology Entry Program (NCSTEP), which completed its 20th Annual Summer Math and Science Camp at SUNY Potsdam in July. Twenty-four middle school students from St. Lawrence County, Franklin County and the St. Regis Mohawk Reservation at Akwesasne attended the camp, which included classes in robotics, math, forensics and renewable energy design. SUNY Potsdam Professor Emeritus's career as a composer inspires photographic works of art

Crane School of Music Professor Emeritus Dr. Arthur Frackenpohl and photographer Jane Lammers of Canton have created music-related photo projects based on Dr. Frackenpohl’s career as a composer, one of which is now on display at Canton-Potsdam Hospital.

SUNY Potsdam student earns honors in international competition

Alexandra “Sasha” Shatalova, a SUNY Potsdam senior from New Paltz, recently was awarded second prize in the First International Double Reed Society (IDRS) Young Artist competition for oboe.

Shatalova competed against 33 young oboists from colleges and conservatories in the United States, Canada and China. The final stage of the competition, restricted to artists who have not reached their 22nd birthday, was held in July at the 2008 IDRS Convention in Provo, UT, on the campus of Brigham Young University. Shatalova received a $1,000 cash award for her placement in the competition.

SUNY Potsdam to be home to five Chinese students from earthquake ravaged region

Of the 150 Chinese undergraduate students who will be attending State University of New York Colleges this fall as part of SUNY’s initiative to provide an education to students from the Sichuan Province of western China, the site of a massive earthquake in May, five will call SUNY Potsdam home for the next year.

SUNY Potsdam attracted nine students at the top of their class for the fall semester

SUNY Potsdam welcomed nine incoming freshmen students at the top of their class for the fall semester, including four valedictorians and five salutatorians.

“We are thrilled that these students accepted our invitations to become a part of our family for the next phase of their lives,” said Tom Nesbitt, director of admissions. “They all have a tremendous work ethic and are active members in their respective communities.”

This year’s valedictorians and salutatorians include students from throughout New York state.

New student fitness center opened in Lehman Hall

In an age when it’s all too easy to find that excuse not to exercise regularly, SUNY Potsdam is helping its student population to take advantage of a workout solution close to home – right in the residence halls.

SUNY Potsdam recently opened a new student fitness center in Lehman Hall to encourage resident students to adopt healthy lifestyles by providing opportunity to exercise close to their dorm rooms.

SUNY Potsdam's Gibson Gallery receives gift of Warhol art

SUNY Potsdam’s Roland Gibson Art Gallery recently was enriched with gifts of art from the Andy Warhol Foundation worth more than $130,000.

The Andy Warhol Foundation announced an unprecedented gift of Warhol art to 183 college and university art museums across the United States in late 2007. The art arrived in Gibson Gallery in July.
