Director of Athletics and Physical Education Vacancy

The College is searching for an innovative and dynamic leader, with a strategic vision for the future, to apply for the position of Director of Athletics and Physical Education. This position is an integral component of the overall educational experience of our students.

The Director will coordinate and administer the intercollegiate athletic program, physical education, club sports, intramurals, and the Maxcy Hall athletic complex including the fitness center. The Director will be responsible for hiring and supervising the instructional faculty, coaches, and other related staff. Management of the department includes day to day operations of the Athletic Department and related areas, budget management, athletic facilities, student athlete recruiting and retention, contest scheduling and management, fund raising, public relations, marketing and promotion, and assessment and evaluation of people and programs towards strategic goals. Additionally, the Director will be responsible for ensuring compliance with NCAA Division III, State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC), Northeast Women’s Hockey League (NEWHL), and Empire 8 Conference regulations.  

Job requirements and essential functions of the position include:  Knowledge of student development to enhance the student athlete experience, recruitment and retention of student athletes for enrollment success. Proven commitment to student success and development, both academically and athletically. Promoting the development of all teams to be competitive, through the recruitment and support of a coaching staff that is diverse, ethical, and talented. Fostering an excellent student athlete experience, both on and off the field of play. Leading, inspiring, mentoring, and supervising athletics staff in ways which develop teamwork and accountability. Financial management and budget planning, strategic planning, visioning and assessment, all of which are aimed at continued quality improvement within the athletics program. Developing a comprehensive education program that addresses topical issues for student athletes. Working collaboratively with other campus offices, promoting and cooperating with the College regarding student conduct policies, student behavior, and academic integrity. Maximizing promotion of athletic events through creative marketing and sponsorships. Maintaining competencies in, and ensuring compliance with, requirements of NCAA, SUNYAC, Title IX, and College policies -  especially regarding player eligibility. Encouraging diversity, equity and inclusion within the department and across campus, Establishing relationships with off-campus constituents, including alumni, vendors, sponsors, donors, and community clubs and organizations. Modeling and promoting the highest standards of integrity, ethical behavior, professionalism and institutional pride, and providing leadership to the campus community to encourage all students and faculty members to become active in regular healthy exercise or activities.

Required qualifications include a master’s degree, along with a minimum of seven to ten years’ progressive athletics experience in areas such as administration, coaching, recreation, and supervision (preferably on the collegiate level) demonstrating strong leadership skills and fiscal responsibility. Essential to the position is someone with excellent interpersonal, communication, organizational, and public-relations skills. In addition, the successful candidate must have high levels of energy and enthusiasm, ability to motivate others toward shared goals, and a proven record of developing a strong and inclusive leadership team.  We are, especially, seeking candidates who have engaged in professional development activities to enhance knowledge of diversity, equity and inclusion and have worked collaboratively across various departments in fostering success of underrepresented groups and a supportive and inclusive environment for all.
