Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences Vacancy

Applications are being accepted for the position of Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences. We seek an advocate for liberal arts education and a creative and consultive leader capable of addressing the many challenges facing public higher education.

The successful candidate will have a clear vision for enhancing academic excellence, an appreciation of the value of the distinctive natures of the various arts and sciences disciplines, and a record of building a collaborative and positive culture of teaching and learning within a trans-disciplinary campus context.  Reporting directly to the Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs, as chief administrative officer of the School, the Dean serves as a primary liaison with the School of Education and Professional Studies and The Crane School of Music and serves on the Provost’s Cabinet, President’s Council, and other college committees.

The Dean supervises all of the School’s faculty members, professional and administrative staff, and the Associate and Assistant Deans. The Dean of Arts and Sciences is responsible for the administration of the School which includes, but is not limited to: overseeing academic quality and academic policy within the School; recruiting and retaining diverse and highly competent faculty and staff; coordinating curricular development with the School’s faculty in conjunction with other academic programs on campus; evaluating the School’s personnel according to policy and contracted timelines, including making recommendations for reappointment and permanent appointment; and developing and maintaining the School’s budget in a manner that is transparent and reflective of the School’s academic priorities. 

Required qualifications include:  An earned doctorate or terminal degree in one of the School’s academic disciplines or a closely related field, a record of distinguished academic achievement in teaching, service, scholarship and/or creative activities appropriate for appointment at the rank of professor in a department or program of the School of Arts and Sciences, proven record of experience in developing, implementing, and sustaining excellence in academic programming, ability to advocate for the role of the liberal arts and sciences, academic administrative experience at the level of department chair or beyond that demonstrates success in supervision of staff, personnel evaluations, program assessment, budget management, and collaboration with shared governance and other units, demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and possess effective communication skills.
