Assessment of Institutional Effectiveness (Campus Statistics)

The Office of Institutional Effectiveness at SUNY Potsdam believes that Institutional Assessment activities must be grounded in sound research strategies and that the primary objective of assessment is to produce
information that can be used for decision making and institutional improvement.

In many ways, the following information represents a "work in progress" as we transition towards an ultimate technology using data dashboards with key performance indicators. In providing the information on this website, we are striving for simplicity and clarity in communication  of  institutional assessment results.  As you use these data to inform  strategic planning, decision-making and resource allocation, and you have further questions regarding the validity, reliability, confidence intervals, tests of significance or other psycho-metrics related to the assessment tools used, please do not hesitate to contact the Office of Institutional Effectiveness for specifics.

SUNY Potsdam Surveys

National Study of Student Engagement (NSSE)

The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) collects information annually from samples of first year and senior students about the nature and quality of their undergraduate experience.  Since its inception, nearly 1,400 baccalaureate-granting colleges and universities in the US and Canada have used NSSE to measure the extent to which students engage in effective educational practices that are empirically linked with learning ,personal development, and used by faculty administrators, researchers, and others for institutional improvement, accountability and related purposes.

Student Opinion Survey (SOS)

The primary purpose of the SOS is to inform administrators about the status of the college's academic, student, and administrative programs, services and facilities as perceived by undergraduate students.  Campus administrators use this information to identify areas that need attention and/or further analysis.  The SOS also identifies areas that are meeting and/or exceeding expectations and data are collected every 3 years.

Cooperative Institutional Research Program Freshman Survey (CIRP)

For over 2 decades, SUNY Potsdam has participated in the Cooperative Institutional Research Program (CIRP) Freshman Survey.  Freshman complete the survey during the summer orientation sessions in July.  This annual data provides valuable profile regarding the background, attitudes, behavior and aspirations of an incoming cohort of students.  Data analyzed over several years also inform faculty and College administration of important trends.

Special Projects and Reports:

From time to time, the Office of Institutional Effectiveness will support various ad hoc campus data collection activities and often these data are valuable and informative resources to share.
