Early Alert Grading

Faculty are asked to submit Early Alert grades for students earning below a 2.0 at the end of the sixth week of classes. All Early Alert grades should be submitted via the web on Bear at http://bearpaws.potsdam.edu.

The Registrar will notify faculty via E-mail when Early Alert rosters will be available for grading on the web each semester.

Special Notes and Helpful Hints:

  • We recommend that you use Internet Explorer as your web browser when accessing Bear for faculty with PC computers and MAC's with up to Operating System X.3. With new MAC's, use Safari for accessing Bear. If you experience any browser problems, please contact the Helpdesk at 267-2083 for assistance.

  • Do not use the "Back" button on your browser when grading, or your grades may not be properly saved. Instead click on"Return to Menu" at the top right of the page.

  • Submit grades only for those UNDERGRADUATE students currently performing BELOW THE 2.0 LEVEL in your class(es).

  • Students with Early Alert grades should be encouraged to contact you and their advisor as soon as possible to discuss strategies for academic improvement, possible course Withdrawal, and the Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory grading option.

  • Please turn in Early Alerts even if you have notified the students in person of their course standing, since copies of the Early Alerts go to academic advisors, special program counselors and sports team coaches who can offer students academic assistance.

  • If a student has never attended or has stopped attending your class, please submit a 0.0 grade. This will prompt the student to officially drop or withdraw from your course.

How to Submit Your Early Alert Grades:

  1. Log into Bear.

  2. Click on "Faculty and Advisors".

  3. Click on "Faculty Services" then click on "Early Alert Grades".

  4. Select the term from the pull-down menu, and submit it.

  5. Select the CRN of your course from the pull-down menu, and submit it.

  6. On your Early Alert roster, use the pull-down menu to the right of each student name to select a grade for any student(s) currently below the 2.0 level.

  7. Click on "Submit" at the bottom of the page to save your grades.

  8. If your roster goes onto more than one page, be sure to submit your grades for the first page before going on to the second page.

  9. If you are teaching more than one class, return to the menu and click on "CRN Selection" and the "Early Alert Grades" again to go to your next course.

  10. Be sure to log off of your Bear account by clicking the "EXIT" button to prevent unauthorized access to confidential information.
