Philosophy Banner

Welcome to the Philosophy Department at SUNY Potsdam.

Our students are among the most academically successful and active on campus. In recent years, our students have won Chancellor's Awards and President's Awards for Academic Excellence, held high positions in Student Government, and edited and written for the student newspaper, The Racquette.

Employers value persons with philosophy undergraduate degrees for their abilities to think critically and creatively, to clearly present and defend their ideas verbally and in writing, to provide well-reasoned justification for their positions, and to solve problems. Our department’s graduates practice law and medicine, work in government and college administration, are journalists and educators.  SUNY Potsdam philosophy majors work for the New York State Supreme Court, the CIA, Hewlett Packard, the U.S. Forest Service, and many own their own businesses.  Studying philosophy prepares students for success in all aspects of life, including any profession they may choose.
