You and Your Landlord
When dealing with your landlord, you want to polite and honest expect the same from him/her. In addition, keep this "To-Do" list in mind:
- DO: Ask the landlord any questions pertaining to the lease before you sign it! The lease should be clear and easy to understand.
- DO: Make sure you have your landlord’s name and address. He/she knows where you live; to protect both parties, you have the right to his/her contact info as well.
- DO: Find out where to send and in what form your landlord wants the rent. It’s a good idea to send your rent out a few days early; if your landlord receives your rent late, he/she may charge you late fees.
- DO: Find out what your landlord’s policies are —Does he/she mind you having friends over? Does he/she mind you having parties? Does he/she mind you having pets? All of this should be outlined in your lease but it's always good to have a discussion if things are not clear.
- Most of all, DO: Try to be friends with your landlord, he/she is playing a major role in your life, and it’s best to keep an open line of communication between the two of you.
