Potsdam AIDS Education Group

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the World Health Organization, and other international AIDS groups predict that the HIV/AIDS pandemic could be the worst health crisis in human history. Since 1990, New York State which has the highest incidence and prevalence rates of HIV/AIDS in the United States, has mandated age and developmentally appropriate HIV education programs in all schools from K-post secondary that receive State Funds. SUNY-PAEG (Potsdam AIDS Education Group) was formed in 1988, two years prior to the state mandate.

In keeping with the state mandates and national and international guidelines about intervention, prevention, education, and HIV testing, SUNY-PAEG is dedicated to the following:

  1. Providing accurate and current information about prevention.
  2. Providing confidential HIV testing at Student Health that meets New York State requirements about reporting, record keeping, and confidentiality.
  3. Providing an holistic and interdisciplinary approach to intervention that includes Peer AIDS Educators, informational materials in a variety of formats, programming, outreach efforts to local and regional agencies, and pedagogical efforts that address the needs of our campus community.
