No-Show Fees for Psychological Services
The College Counseling Center at SUNY Potsdam strives to optimize students’ access to our services. An ongoing problem has been the student who misses his or her appointment without any prior notification. To encourage students to call and cancel or re-schedule their appointment in advance, the College Counseling Center decided to implement a “no-show/late cancellation” fee. The no-show/late cancellation fee for an appointment with a counselor or the Psychiatrist would be $20.
For example, during the Fall 2012 semester, 190 appointments were “no-shows” and 450 appointments were no-shows in the 2011-2012 academic year – 450 appointments that could have been offered to other students seeking counseling if they had been cancelled in advanced. The intent of this policy is to prevent delays in care and utilize provider time more efficiently by reducing unused appointment slots. If students promptly cancel appointments they cannot make, that appointment is available for another student. This practice has proven to be effective on other campuses dealing with the same issue.
There are often legitimate reasons for missing an appointment. An appeal form is available and students are given two weeks from the date of the missed appointment to submit the appeal form to our office. If the appeal is approved, the fee would be removed from the student’s account. Even if the fee appeal is granted, the missed appointment will still count as a no-show.
You, the student, will be charged a $20.00 fee if:
- You do not provide notice by 3 p.m. the day prior to your appointment for cancellation or rescheduling. If you have an appointment on Monday you must call on Friday by 3 p.m.
- You fail to attend a scheduled appointment.
- If you are 10 minutes late (or 5 minutes for Psychiatrist), you will be asked to reschedule your appointment and the $20.00 fee will be charged.
