What is the difference between the Student Health Insurance Policy and the Mandatory Health Fee?
The Student Health Insurance Policy is an optional plan you can purchase if you need health insurance. It is designed to help you pay for expenses you might incur related to medical care if you are not covered by another policy.
The Mandatory Health Fee is something that students attending SUNY Potsdam pay in order to have Student Health Services on campus. It is bundled into the comprehensive fee that you see on your student bill. Without the mandatory health fee, there would be no Health Services. The fee pays for everything that Student Health Services provides, from programming in the residence halls to the free medication you receive for your pneumonia. Only those students who cannot reasonably be expected to access Health Services can waive this fee. Please see: Request for Waiver of Mandatory Health Fee (PDF)
