SUNY Potsdam Insurance Plan (SPIP)

All domestic, matriculated, graduate or undergraduate SUNY Potsdam students enrolled for 12 or more credit hours in a semester are required to have health insurance coverage.

Until the Fall Semester of 2013, SUNY Potsdam was one of a few SUNY colleges that did not require its students to have health insurance.Major change in the US health insurance industry has lead the SUNY Potsdam College Council to change this policy, with the notification and concurrence of the Student Government Association and Student Health Advisory Council.Beginning the Fall Semester 2013, all matriculated SUNY Potsdam students completing graduate or undergraduate studies enrolled in 12 or more credit hours for a semester are required to have health insurance coverage.

How To Submit A Health Insurance Waiver

The SPIP waiver links become available when the Student Bill becomes available online (usually mid-July and mid-December).The links are found on BearPAWS in four places:

How To Voluntarily Enroll In The SUNY Potsdam Insurance Plan

  • If you are a matriculated SUNY Potsdam student enrolled for 12 or more credit hours in a semester and you wish to enroll in the SPIP, DO NOT submit an insurance waiver.  The SPIP premium will remain on your student bill.
  • Any matriculated SUNY Potsdam student taking from 1 - 11 credit hours, or any non-matriculated SUNY Potsdam taking at least 1 credit hour, may choose to enroll in the SPIP.  To enroll, please contact Haylor, Freyor & Coon (see the Policy Administrators section).  You will pay the premium directly to the insurer, not to the SUNY Potsdam Office of Student Accounts.

How This Policy Affects SUNY Potsdam Students

  • The new policy allowed SUNY Potsdam administration to create an agreement with SUNY Canton and SUNY Plattsburgh to gather those of our students needing SUNY health insurance into a single insurance pool. Students at this campus saw a 28% decrease in the SPIP premium while improving the coverage to include dental benefits, the removal of network requirements, and reduction in out-of-pocket expenses.
  • It prepares you for the full implementation of PPACA in the fall of 2014.
  • It brings SUNY Potsdam in line with the recommendation by the American College Health Association that “the college or university requires students to provide evidence that they have adequate health insurance coverage.”
  • All SUNY Potsdam students will have access to adequate health care.
