The College Counseling Center provides brief solution-based psychological services to students experiencing emotional or situational difficulties. Information shared in counseling is treated with the "strictest" confidence.
Records at the Center are strictly confidential. Records are only released with the student's written consent or by a court-ordered subpoena. Information about student contacts for psychological services is not released to other campus departments, outside agencies, family, or friends. Even the fact that a student has been at the Counseling Center is confidential.
The services provided by the Counseling Center are free, with the exception of the "No-show/Late Cancellation". Please review the Informed Consent for Student Counseling Services (PDF).
Services We Offer
- Individual Counseling
Registered students may be eligible for individual counseling with one of our licensed therapists. A consultation appointment is made to determine the students needs and if the College Counseling Center is an appropriate place for treatment, as we are a brief, solution-focused center. Our goal is to provide clients with a safe, confidential place to discuss their concerns, identify goals for treatment, and integrate healthy coping skills and interventions. Through this process, we assist students with making changes to promote their well-being, achieve specific goals, and maximize their potential. Support groups are formed based on need or interest.
We provide consultation to all members (students, faculty, and staff) of the College community. The focuses are often organizational problems, mental health issues, group dynamics, student-centered approaches, or improvement of learning environments.
- Peer Counselors (PCs)
A group of trained student paraprofessionals are available to assist SUNY Potsdam students with personal concerns. These interns provide counseling support to students during posted hours at the Counseling Center, including some evening hours. Simply walk over to the Counseling Center in Van Housen and ask to see a Peer Counselor!
