Common Presenting Concerns

  • Personal Concerns: Stress, anger, loneliness, guilt, grief
  • Multi-cultural related Concerns: Difficulties related to experience of racial bias, micro-aggressions, or other such xenophobic related prejudice resulting in emotional distress.
  • Relationship Concerns: Romantic difficulties, interpersonal conflicts, family problems
  • Developmental Concerns: Adjustment to college, life transitions, identity (e.g., personal, cultural, sexual orientation, gender identity)
  • Mild to moderate mental health issues, such as anxiety or depression, as appropriate to brief therapy
  • Substance Use: Concerns related to mild or moderate alcohol or other drug use/abuse
  • Academic Concerns: Performance anxiety, perfectionism, or mental health issues that affect academic difficulties
  • Trauma or Interpersonal Violence: Assessment, stabilization, and treatment within a brief therapy model

Additional Information

We provide consultation to all members (students, faculty, and staff) of the College community regarding mental health related concerns.

If you are concerned about a student and are not sure about the best course of action, give us a call! Please do not email with concerns about students in order to allow us to respond in a timely manner.

Psychiatric nurse practitioner available by referral, or request, for diagnostic evaluation, discussion and education related to psychiatric diagnosis, and medication management services. If you have had previous psychiatric services and are already on medication, our psychiatric nurse practitioner can meet with you for continuation of services while you are a student.

SUNY Potsdam partners with SUNY Upstate Medical Hospital in Syracuse NY. Through this program, students can be referred for counseling or psychiatric appointments. Services are free for students. Referral paperwork can be completed at the Counseling Center.

Crisis sessions are available for students exhibiting acute crisis where their safety and that of others is of concern.

A group of trained student paraprofessionals are available to assist SUNY Potsdam students with personal concerns. These interns provide counseling support to students after completing and passing a semester-long training semester with one of our therapists. Passing interns must be approved to move into the first field-training experience.
