Childhood/Early Childhood Education FIG

This First Year Interest Group (FIG) gives promising new teachers the foundation needed to succeed in SUNY Potsdam’s Childhood/Early Childhood Education program through an exploration of the various disciplines taught in a classroom.  This FIG contains a First Year Success Seminar to assist students in becoming better acclimated to SUNY Potsdam and the services we provide. One history class (3 credits, AH requirement) may be added to this cluster. Students pursuing Childhood/Early Childhood Education should NOT choose this FIG if they anticipate receiving AP or college credit in English or American History.  Education advisors will assist you in choosing other required courses at orientation.

Two hours of lecture and one two-hour laboratory weekly. For students who are not science majors and plan to enter the teaching profession. The course provides students an in-depth understanding of the major themes and concepts of biology including cell structure and function, genetics, evolution, biodiversity, and ecology. The laboratory section activities are modified to include aspects of Native American culture as it intersects with the biological learning experience. Satisfies General Education SB and LB requirements.

Encourages development of writing, critical thinking and the use of information resources. Addresses how language permits communication, shapes thought and changes through time. Satisfies General Education FW requirement.

91882 MATH 101 Math for Elementary Education I: 3 Cr. MWF 9:00-9:50 a.m. Madore, B.

Students learn about number systems and abstract and symbolic representations through problem-solving approach. Instead of traditional lecture, this course encourages students to learn through discovery. This course satisfies one of the mathematics concentration requirements for the B.A. in Elementary Education. Not required for double majors in mathematics and elementary education. Prerequisite: three years of high school Regents level mathematics or permission. Satisfies General Education FM requirement.

This course is a comprehensive overview of American history and geography from pre-Columbian times to the present. It is designed to meet the needs of students in the Childhood/Early Childhood Education Program. Satisfies General Education AH requirement.

The seminar is a one-hour-a week course developed specifically to give ambitious first year Education students an accelerated transition to SUNY Potsdam. Explore the purpose and value of higher education, learn the academic standards of the college, address social and academic transition issues, and discover campus programs, services and technologies of use to the Education major. Develop your own academic skills and learning strategies for success at SUNY Potsdam. Taught by an Education program advisor.
