Dr. Heather Sullivan-Catlin, Professor, Sociology & Criminal Justice

My primary areas of interest are family, community, and sustainability ? all of which intersect in my work on ecovillages and food security, teaching a wide variety of programs both inside my department (Sociology, Criminal Justice, Human Services) and beyond (Women's and Gender Studies, Environmental Studies, Learning Communities and FYE). I am passionate about experiential education. I have incorporated service-learning activities into most of my courses, included students in community-based research projects, served as sponsor for scores of student interns, led travel courses abroad and numerous field trips closer to home. I believe these experiences provide students with important opportunities to develop, as our campus mission states, into "engaged global citizens. "Outside of my own classroom I have worked to promote service-learning on our own campus and beyond in my role as Service-Learning Faculty Liaison. I have also worked on service-learning development at the state and national levels, publishing pedagogical scholarship in Teaching Sociology and presenting many service-learning workshops.
