Before you can receive IRB approval to conduct research with human subjects, all those involved with the study (principal Investigator, Co-investigator(s), student researchers/assistants and research staff members) are all required to complete the CITI training course.

If you are creating a CITI account for the first time and taking the Basic Course in the Protection of Human Research Subjects, please review either the following "how to" videos or text instructions for how to create an account and take the Basic Human Subjects Protection Course.

To complete the online human subjects training - go online here

  1. Log in (create a log in if this is your first time)
  2. Affiliate with SUNY Potsdam
  3. Click on “View Courses”
  4. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on “Add a course”
  5. Scroll down and answer the questions regarding COVID information and funding for your project.
  6. When you get to the question about which learners group you need check the first box for Human Subjects (see picture below)

  7. If this is your first time taking the CITI Human Subjects choose “No, I have not previously completed the CITI Basic Course”, if you have taken the CITI Human Subjects course previously then choose “Yes, I did previously complete the CITI Basic Course at SUNY Potsdam and now I need to complete the CITI Refresher Course.”
  8. It will then ask you to select a course based on your needs. There are separate courses for researchers (faculty/staff) as well as an option for students.
  9. It will then ask you if you are conducting research that involves private health information, check “Yes” or “No” based upon the scope of your research.
  10. It will then ask if your project is funded by NSF or NIH funds. If your project is funded by one of these external grant agencies select the appropriate response, otherwise check “No.”
  11. Once all these questions have been answered (8 total) the course will be added to your CITI homepage under “Courses Ready to Begin.”
  12. Click on your course, it will ask you to agree to the terms of service and then the required modules for your CITI certificate will be loaded.
  13. Click on the first module to begin your training. When you complete your course (successful completion of all the quizzes), a report will be sent to the Research and Sponsored Programs Office and you should keep your completion certificate.
