Trustee Impact

Like many others during the present health crisis, Pete Galloway ’83 wondered what he could do to support those who were facing challenges as a result of COVID-19.

“One outcome of the current situation for me is a renewed realization that I am very blessed with good health and a steady job, and with so many people being affected by the virus, I feel the need to do what I can to help others,” he shared.

The Alumni Board Secretary soon realized he did not have to look further than his own Potsdam family to find a need that he could help fill.

“My decision to redirect my endowed fund pledge this year was a result of the video President Esterberg did calling on everyone connected with Potsdam to do what they could to help support our students in need,” Pete shared.

Instead of directing his annual gift entirely to the Greek Alumni Endowment, which he established in 2017, Pete chose to designate a significant portion to support the Student Care Fund and the Pay It Forward Scholarship Program, which provide support to students facing one-time emergencies or financial challenges that cannot be met with traditional aid.

Three weeks later, Pete attended the virtual meeting of the Alumni Board of Trustees and the Potsdam Foundation Board of Trustees. There, President Esterberg and College faculty/staff members shared compelling stories of students facing extreme financial and familial challenges. Moved by these stories, Pete chose to give again, and together the Boards contributed over $41,000 to support students’ needs.

For Pete, giving back to his alma mater feels logical and natural.

“My time at SUNY Potsdam shaped my life in so many positive ways; it only makes sense for me to return the favor in any way that I can so others can have the same experience.”
