Crane School of Music Welcomes Soli Chamber Ensemble for Residency

April 5, 2018

The SOLI Chamber Ensemble will visit SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music for an upcoming residency, with a free public concert on Tuesday, April 17 at 7:30 p.m. in Hosmer Hall.

SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music will welcome the SOLI Chamber Ensemble as artists-in-residence on Monday and Tuesday, April 16 and 17.

The San Antonio-based quartet (with clarinet, violin, cello and piano) will lead workshops with music business and arts administration students, conduct masterclasses for each member’s respective instruments, and engage in a reading session of student-composed works.

The highlight of the SOLI Chamber Ensemble residency will be a concert on Tuesday, April 17 at 7:30 p.m. in the Hosmer M. Hosmer Concert Hall. The concert will feature works commissioned by SOLI, including “Catching Updrafts” by Crane Associate Dean Dr. David Heuser, as well as works by Jennifer Jolley and George Tsontakis. Prior to the concert, the ensemble will hold an open rehearsal in Hosmer Hall from 5 to 6 p.m.

This concert is free, and the public is invited to attend.

About the visiting artists:

The SOLI Chamber Ensemble is in its 24th season and has performed widely all over the country, including an appearance at South by Southwest. The SOLI Chamber Ensemble includes Stephanie Key (clarinet), David Mollenauer (cello), Ertan Torgul (violin) and Carolyn True (piano). The ensemble has commissioned 45 new works, and in 2013 they were awarded the CMA/ASCAP Adventurous Programming Award. The individual artists are all accomplished solo and chamber artists and teachers in their own right, and include the San Antonio Symphony’s assistant principal clarinet, assistant principal cellist and former acting concertmaster. SOLI embodies the collaborative nature of chamber music, regularly including other musicians and artists in their concerts, with a history of creating new art in collaboration with living composers.

The SOLI Chamber Ensemble residency is supported through the LoKo Arts Festival, thanks to the generosity of its founders, Donald (Hon. ’54) and Kathryn Kofoed Lougheed ’54. Additional support has been provided by the Crane Student Association and the Crane School of Music Department of Theory, History and Composition.
