SUNY Potsdam Child Care Center Executive Director Lori Moulton was selected by the SUNY Early Care and Education Leaders as this year’s recipient of the Marcia Brady Excellence in Early Childhood Administrator Award.

The Marcia Brady Award was created to celebrate administrators, childcare staff and community partners who have made significant achievements in the improvement and advancement of early care and education, within the SUNY childcare community.

Moulton was recognized at the 2018 SUNY Early Care and Education Conference held in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., in June. The theme of this year’s conference was “Inspiring Excellence.” Each year, four SUNY Potsdam Child Care Center administrators and educators attend this three-day staff development event to participate in workshops, take in keynote presentations and network with fellow professionals.

Moulton was selected to lead the center in 1998, and has served as executive director for 20 years. She is a member of the local St. Lawrence Child Care Council Board of Directors, and the SUNY Canton Early Childhood Program Advisory Board.

Moulton is a SUNY Potsdam alumna, and her commitment to providing and maintaining a high-quality early childcare program is certainly evident throughout her career. In 1995, she was permanently certified to teach early childhood/childhood education (from birth to Grade 6) and reading (from Kindergarten to Grade 12). She previously worked for St. Lawrence-Lewis BOCES in a multi-option classroom for children with special needs, and also spent nine years at St. Mary’s School in Canton, teaching at the first, third and fifth grade levels, as well as physical education and art.

This year, Moulton has been actively involved in the design and plans for the College’s new $6 million Child Care Center facility. It has taken many extra hours of hard work and dedication, but she will soon witness the result of her efforts when the SUNY Potsdam Child Care Center relocates to its new building, at 185 Outer Main St., in late August.

In its new location on Outer Main Street across from The Crane School of Music, the 13,000-square-foot SUNY Potsdam Child Care Center building will offer easy access for busy parents to drop off and pick up their children without driving through campus. The new facility will feature seven classrooms specially designed for every age group served by the center, each with dedicated children’s bathrooms and special rooms as needed, such as sleeping spaces for infants, a changing area for toddlers, a project space for preschool-age children and a laundry area.

The new SUNY Potsdam Child Care Center facility was designed by Architectural Resources PC, and the general contractor for the project is Bette & Cring LLC.

The SUNY Potsdam Child Care Center serves children of SUNY students, faculty and staff, as well as the community at large. Founded in 1990, the center is based on the philosophy that each child has unique, individual needs and developmental patterns. Experiences planned for the children promote the positive development of emotional, social, intellectual and physical/motor abilities. Curriculum planning focuses on each child's need to grow and enhances the development of a positive self-image.

Students in SUNY Potsdam’s childhood, early childhood, literacy and community health programs are able to apply their learning through internships and classroom assignments with the Child Care Center, as are students from other disciplines and high school students in the St. Lawrence-Lewis BOCES program.
