Crane School of Music Alumna Lynn McGrath '97 & '00 Returns to Present Solo Guitar Recital

Guitarist Lynn McGrath ’97 & '00 will present an alumni recital at SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music on Oct. 1.

SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music will welcome guitarist Lynn McGrath ’97 & '00 for an alumni recital on Monday, Oct. 1 at 7:30 p.m., in the Sara M. Snell Music Theater.

The performance will include works by John Dowland, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco Houghton, Philip Houghton, Agustín Barrios Mangor and Johann Kaspar Mertz.

This event is free, and the public is invited to attend.

About the performer:

Dr. Lynn McGrath ’97 & '00 has performed, lectured and adjudicated on four continents. Having taken part in international festivals such as the Nikšić Festival (Montenegro), Silesian Guitar Autumn Festival (Poland), the Guitar on the Mediterranean Festival, the Volterra Project (Italy), and the Guitar Foundation of America Festival (U.S.), she has toured in Canada, the United Kingdom, Peru and New Zealand, where she performed on New Zealand National Public Radio.

McGrath has also presented at the University of Colorado Boulder, Victoria Conservatory of Music, Oberlin Conservatory, the University of Veracruz and Mannes College, as well as at prominent venues like the Troy (N.Y.) Savings Hall, the National Hispanic Cultural Center and the Skirball Cultural Center. She has collaborated with larger groups as a soloist, including with the Orchestra of Northern New York; the Albuquerque-based choir Quintessence; on Santa Fe Opera’s 2014 season, and as a member of the acclaimed Tantalus Guitar Quartet, praised for its “perfect ensemble.”

After receiving degrees in Spanish language and literature as well as education at SUNY Potsdam, she completed a music degree at The Crane School of Music, studying with Douglas Rubio. She later taught as a full-time instructor at Crane as well. McGrath and earned both her Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from the University of Southern California, where she was a teaching assistant and award recipient, studying with such luminaries as William Kanengiser, Pepe Romero and James Smith.

Also active in administrative roles, McGrath has worked for the Guitar Foundation of America for 10 years, including seven years as the tour director, and three as the director of regional symposia, and as the artistic director of the organization’s annual International Youth Competition.

A highly sought-after private teacher, her students have been accepted by some of the best undergraduate and graduate schools in the nation, have placed in international competitions, and have been featured on NPR’s “From the Top.” In 2017, McGrath was appointed as senior guitar instructor at the Eastman Community Music School at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y.
