Gilman International Scholarship

Purpose: Offers grants for undergraduate students of limited financial means to pursue academic studies abroad. The program aims to encourage students to choose nontraditional destinations, especially those outside of Western Europe and Australia, although programs in these countries are also considered. The Gilman Scholarship aims to support students who have been traditionally underrepresented in study abroad, including students with high financial need, in underrepresented fields such as the sciences and engineering, with diverse ethnic backgrounds, with disabilities, and of nontraditional age.

Eligibility: Undergraduates who are receiving a federal Pell grant funding are eligible to apply. The applicant is applying to or has been accepted into a (fall and/or spring) study abroad program eligible for credit by the student's accredited institution of higher education in the U.S.

The Gilman International Scholarship Program offers grants for U.S. citizen undergraduate students of limited financial means to pursue academic studies abroad. Such international study is intended to better prepare U.S. students to assume significant roles in an increasingly global economy and interdependent world.

Students must also propose a Follow-on project to promote International Education after the return from their study abroad experience.

Award areas: All, up to $5000 for study abroad. Critical need languages may receive up to an additional $3000 (Arabic, Chinese, Turkic, Indic, Persian, Korean, and Russian).

Goldwater Scholarship

Application Instructions

The Barry Goldwater Scholarship is designed to attract outstanding students into careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit to students who are sophomores or juniors during the current academic year and who have excellent academic records and demonstrated interest in and potential for careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering. Goldwater Scholars intend to pursue higher education and a career in the STEM fields. Nearly all recent Goldwater recipients intend to obtain a Ph.D.

The scholarship covers eligible expenses for tuition, fees, books, and room and board to a maximum of $7,500 per academic year.

Note: The Goldwater scholarship is intended for students planning careers in research (Ph.D.), rather than careers as practicing medical physicians.

Statistics

On average, ~ 200-215 scholarships are awarded annually out of a pool of ~ 1,100-1300 applicants (~ 15-20 % success rate). However, due to a partnership with the National Defense Education Programs, the number of awarded Goldwater scholarships has increased this 2019/2020 to almost 500 college students from across the United States (~ 40% success rate).
Many of the Scholars have dual majors in a variety of mathematics, science, engineering, and computer science.
