Online Career Tools for Students

The coronavirus pandemic has disrupted more than just how we deliver courses - it's our whole life. For some of you that means the job search you were in the middle of has been completely disrupted, and others of you aren't graduating yet but still aren't sure what to do next.

We can help.

Career Services is still here to support you at any stage in your career development. We recognize the major challenge you're facing in accessing college services remotely, and our team is dedicated to making things easier for students during this unpredictable time. All career appointments and workshops have been moved online, and although we miss seeing and serving you in person, we are eager to assist you virtually. We encourage you to make the most of the resources below - please communicate with us if we can help you in any other way.

Appointments

Our career counselors and peer advisers now offer Zoom and phone call appointments. Appointments can help with career exploration, resumes, cover letters, digital branding, interview prep, and more. Visit Handshake to book an appointment with us. We look forward to helping you on your career journey!

Workshops

Workshops will continue over Zoom during the Spring 2020 semester. Visit GetInvolved to view and register for topics, including:

  • Job/Internship Search
  • Digital Branding
  • Salary Negotiation
  • more!

Resume and Cover Letter

If you don't have time for a resume review appointment, or you want to get started on your own, check out these tools:

  • Use Optimal Resume to build a resume from scratch and view resume samples

  • View our resume and cover letter guides to build and refine your documents.

  • See our peer advisers to tailor your materials to a specific posting, or get feedback on what you built using online tools.

Career exploration and job searching

Your annual Career Fee pays for many exclusive commercial platforms, all available to you online. Here are some of our favorite resources to explore careers, search for internships, and find full-time jobs:

  • Complete a self-assessment on Focus 2 (you will need an access code; please email career@potsdam.edu to ask for a code!) and learn which professions and jobs suit your strengths and preferences.

  • Explore different industries and search for jobs on Vault.

  • Employers post jobs to SUNY Potsdam's Handshake because they're interested in our graduates. Take advantage of that! Handshake also published a report on recruiting trends with new information (post-COVID-19) in April 2020.

  • Hoping to work for New York State? Start here, to learn the (sort of complicated!) processes involved in getting hired.

  • Search for positions on Careershift, which combines postings from multiple online platforms.

  • See our job search guide for career-specific job search sites

  • Better yet, book an appointment with our career counselors to discuss your unique situation!

Video Interviewing

Everything went online, so when you find a job or internship opportunity to apply for, you'll need to interview online. Amp up your virtual interview skills!
