Bicentennial Celebration

In 1867 when the State authorized the establishment of four more Normal Schools, Potsdam was chosen as one of the locations.  The St. Lawrence Academy buildings were demolished and a new Normal School, pictured here, was built on that site.

Steeped in Tradition

The long tradition of teacher training began back in the St. Lawrence Academy days.  The Practice School and Campus School gave future educators the chance the become familiar with typical school conditions and the art of teaching.

Dig It

Students in Archaeology class have done many field digs.  This dig was the first of two directed by Professor Steven Marqusee in nearby Burke, NY.  This farm is the actual location and original house of Almanzo Wilder's childhood as depicted in his wife's well known historical fiction novel Farmer Boy.

200 Years of Experience
In 2016, SUNY Potsdam will celebrate 200 years of excellence.

Celebrate!

The College will be celebrating its Bicentennial beginning in the summer of 2015, with Reunion Weekend and Potsdam's Summer Festival in July. When we start the Bicentennial academic cycle in August 2015, we will kick off a year of events, traditional and celebratory, that will hit a high point in March 2016 on Charter Day, with our celebration of 200 years since the signing of the Charter of St. Lawrence Academy. The 5th Annual Lougheed Festival of the Arts and the College's triennial Academic Festival will follow soon after, and Commencement 2016 will see us send our Bicentennial graduates out into the world. We will recap the celebrations and exhibits during Reunion 2016.

Participate - Propose or Sponsor an Event!

  • Do you have a great idea for a Bicentennial event?
  • Do you or your organization want to sponsor an event?
  • Is there a piece of the College's history you wish we could showcase during this year?

The Bicentennial Steering Committee has released a Call for Proposals for added Bicentennial events, and has included a list of possible celebrations that need a home and sponsors on or off campus. Please check out the Proposal Application!
