Mathematics Honor Society

Pi Mu Epsilon was incorporated in 1914 under the laws of New York State, the sequel to an earlier mathematics club at Syracuse University. Each chapter is designated by the state in which it is located and by the Greek letters assigned according to the chronological order of the date on the charters of the chapters within the state. We are the New York Phi Chapter. The chapter was chartered in 1969. It was the 151st chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon nationally and the 20th in New York. The NY Phi chapter was installed on April 8, 1970. At that time, 26 members were inducted, including 5 faculty.

The purpose of Pi Mu Epsilon is to promote scholarly activity in mathematics among students in academic institutions. It aims to do this by:

  1. Electing members on an honorary basis according to their proficiency in mathematics
  2. Engaging in activities designed to promote the mathematical and scholarly development of its members, and
  3. Taking any other measures needed to further the purpose of the society.

Our chapter has worked towards this purpose with the following activities: the induction, faculty-student mixers, faculty lectures, student talks, the Pi Mu Epsilon Senior award, and social events.
