Some Basics
Every country has its own distinct culture and customs, and the US is no different. Despite being a very open and tolerant country, supportive of many different cultures, there are still many things that are distinctly "American" ? and which may take some getting used to!

American culture is in favour of individual freedoms, equal opportunities, and education. The US has a positive "can-do" attitude, and is very supportive of creative and driven people who want to succeed. In some ways, it is a more conservative country than other wealthy Western nations, such as the UK and Scandinavia; socially, though, it is fairly liberal.

Socially, American culture tends to be more casual and informal than other cultures. Americans usually dress casually ? jeans and sweaters are much more common than suits and ties ? and American people are usually very friendly. However, newcomers can be surprised by Americans' direct manner. To some people, this can come off as rude; however, in most cases, it is simply the American way, so try not to take offence!

Sports
Sports are a very big part of American culture, and many Americans love to watch and discuss sports such as football, soccer, and basketball. People often congregate in bars to watch "the big game", or at each other's houses. Sports make up a big part of college life, too, and SUNY Potsdam is no exception. SUNY Potsdam offers opportunities in hockey, football, soccer, swimming and more, and joining a sports team is a great way to stay fit and make new friends. Learn More about SUNY Potsdam Athletics!

Alcohol ? Be Aware!
While American students do visit bars, it is important to remember the US legal drinking age is 21. It is strictly enforced. Penalties for breaking it, or assisting others to do so, can be severe. If you are over 21 and wish to purchase alcohol, you will be required to show formal ID such as your passport or driving licence. If you are under 21 and are caught purchasing or consuming alcohol, the college, the police, or both may discipline you and your parents may be informed. For international students, this is particularly risky. Best to stick to cola!

Eating Out
US socializing often focuses around food and restaurants, and the food in the US tends to be of good quality and inexpensive ? though you will often get very large portions! Do not feel any pressure to "clear your plate" once you are full ? US hosts do not see it as rude if you don't finish, and it is the norm in restaurants to ask for a box to take your leftovers home. The US is very good at catering to specific tastes, so if you are following a particular diet or have certain foods you must avoid for medical or cultural reasons, you will be well cared for in the US.

Tipping
It is expected in US restaurants that diners always leave a "tip" for the serving staff. The general rule of thumb is 15% of the final bill (e.g. if the bill was $20, you would leave an extra $3), or 20% if the service or meal was particularly good. Other service providers such as taxi drivers and hairdressers should also usually be tipped a few doll
