Students in the NCSTEP program are provided with opportunities to visit college facilities and industries related to their science and math interest. There are also trips to science and math centers, health facilities and museums, science and math demonstrations and labs and field trips that feature science and mathematics.
Students are invited to attend workshops designed to improve their skills in science or mathematics. Such workshops also demonstrate the relevance of such curricula to various careers. Guest speakers from various careers as well as college students serve as role models and share career and college preparation information.
Often, workshops are combined with college overnights to acclimate students with campus living.
NCSTEP counselors work with students on study skills, time management, and test taking skills. NCSTEP provides several computer programs and other activities for students to use during study time. Tutoring is arranged for students in need.
Whenever feasible, NCSTEP provides opportunities for students to visit the colleges of their choice and attend interview sessions. College application procedures, financial aid assistance, and assistance with forms are all provided to the students.
