Bite winter chills back while conserving energy!

Winter is on it's way-but you can conserve energy and stay warm when heating your rooms, apartments or homes by making these few adjustments:

  • Electrical outlets/switch plates on outer walls - unscrew the covers and install some inexpensive foam pads (they cost about @$2.) - this will block cold air; for outlets on outer walls that you don't use regularly, install baby-proofing plugs to block air coming in the plug holes.
  • Closets - keep your closet doors closed; closets don't need to be heated.
  • If you've got a room that you don't use regularly or for basement windows, purchase a roll of fiberglass batt insulation and cover the windows during the winter; even if you've got newer double-glazed windows, you'll reduce cold air infiltration and save money.
  • Lock all windows - the locking device pushes the window into the track and seals it tight.

Getting involved is really easy, and it can start with something as simple as taking an environmental studies course or joining our student environmental group, Middle Ground. There are also at-home steps you can take to live more sustainable life every day.
