SUNY Potsdam Chemistry Professor Named Cottrell Scholar

SUNY Potsdam Professor of Chemistry Dr. Fadi Bou-Abdallah has been named a Cottrell Scholar by the Research Corporation for Scientific Advancement.

SUNY Potsdam Professor of Chemistry Dr. Fadi Bou-Abdallah was recently named a Cottrell Scholar by the Research Corporation for Science Advancement.

The Cottrell Scholar Award develops outstanding teacher-scholars in the fields of chemistry, physics and astronomy, who are recognized by their scientific communities for the quality and innovation of their research programs and their academic leadership skills. Nurturing an interdisciplinary community of outstanding scientific/academic leaders, the CS program fosters synergy among faculty at major American research universities and primarily undergraduate institutions.

“This is a great honor for me and a recognition that SUNY Potsdam hires some of the best faculty in the sciences. This award is the result of a culmination of years of excellence in teaching, research and mentoring undergraduates,” Dr. Bou-Abdallah said.

The Cottrell Scholar accolades come on top of past recognition for Bou-Abdallah, who was also named the recipient of a Henry Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award last year. He is one of only four faculty members from the State University of New York system who are currently listed among the Cottrell Scholars.

Bou-Abdallah’s research focuses on a family of proteins that regulate iron to minimize potential toxic effects of free iron in the human body, such as cell damage and infections. His work aims at characterizing the mechanisms of iron uptake and release, with the hope of developing treatments for iron-related disorders. The dynamic nature and nano-cage structures of this family of proteins contribute to their versatility, allowing for some unconventional applications to be performed, including their use as nutritional delivery vehicles, nano-material template synthesizers and nano-sensor delivery machines, among others, Bou-Abdallah added.
