Department of Mathematics

SUNY Potsdam's major "develops rigorous mathematical thinking and offers a spectrum of (well-taught) courses in pure and applied mathematics."

- The Mathematical Association of America

The mathematics program is based on the belief that students can succeed if they are provided with a supportive environment.

Mathematics reveals hidden patterns that help us understand the world around us.  Now much more than arithmetic and geometry, mathematics today is a diverse discipline that deals with data, measurements, and observations from science; with inference, deduction, and proof; and with mathematical models of natural phenomena, of human behavior, and of social systems.

The Mathematics major at SUNY Potsdam is a strong part of many undergraduate programs — it blends well with engineering, economics, physics, chemistry, computer science and music, among others.

Upcoming Events

  • Mathematics Undergraduate Colloquium Series (MUCS)
MUCS is an exciting lecture series featuring talks from a wide variety of mathematical disciplines, and open to the public. Our mission is to provide opportunities for students, faculty, and the general public to learn about special topics in mathematics disciplines. Topics range from voting theory and image processing to logic and origami. MUCS gives our undergraduates and masters students a unique opportunity to broaden their horizons and meet specialists from outside the Potsdam community.  Stay tuned for new schedule of events.
