Students and professionals engage in creative problem solving requiring the setting and meeting of long-term goals and the analysis and understanding movement and dramatic literature.
Faculty and students work closely in support of our active production program which includes productions that are directed and choreographed by students, faculty members, and guest artists. These include ten-minute and one-act play festivals, faculty dance concerts, full-length plays and student choreographers' concerts.

The Department of Theatre and Dance in collaboration with dedicated alumni are working hard to establish scholarships for students. Learn more about the William Champney Scholarship Fund Development in our blog.
“I am now even more appreciative of the training I received at SUNY Potsdam--especially in anatomy and Pilates. My body knowledge and awareness have put me at a distinct advantage at times during my Pilates certification classes. I've also noticed, through interacting with other dancers, that many dance departments don't focus much on anatomy. So, I am very thankful for that, and for how beneficial the curriculum and experience at SUNY Potsdam has been for me.”

"It's a testament to three people on the Drama Program faculty that I was captured into orbit around the world of theatre. First was Bill Champney. His contagious enthusiasm, infectious laugh and sometimes stinging encouragement allowed me to open my eyes to a whole new direction for my life. Second was Joe Flauto. His ability to draw out the dormant and as-yet-undiscovered artistry inside of my heart and soul allowed me to put my now opened eyes to good use. Third was Dorothy Gmucs. Her iron will (in contrast to her gentle encouragement) not only raised my bar of quality to a much higher level, but also showed me how to have faith and confidence in myself and in my craft."
