May 7: Academic Policy Changes for Spring 2020 (COVID-19)

Hello,

Given this unique semester, the College would like to ensure you are aware of relevant campus policies that you may wish to consider, as well as some policy changes for this semester.

IMPORTANT:  To request any of these options for any of your courses, please pay close attention to the deadlines below.  Some are as soon as next Friday, 5/15/20 @ 11:59 p.m.!

S/U Grade Option

  • Attention: Includes new grade of “P”- keep reading!

First, you must speak to an advisor to ensure that this option is allowed and that selecting it for any course(s) will not negatively impact your time to degree completion.  If you’re unable to reach your advisor, the SSC offers drop-in virtual advising weekdays from 1-4 p.m. using this link.  Crane students may also contact the Crane Dean’s Office

If you are seeking to change to the S/U grading option as a result of either the virus itself or issues related to it (e.g. changes to classes as a result of the shift online), please complete this form to be considered for a late S/U.  You may submit these requests for consideration until Friday, 5/15/20 at 11:59 p.m.

Changes for Spring 2020:

  • The College has adopted a policy that creates a new “Low Pass” or P grading option. This change allows students to avoid the negative impact of a low grade during this challenging semester and to potentially earn additional credit toward their degree and/or General Education requirements.
    • Please see the FAQs online to further understand the potential impact of the S/P/U grade option in effect for all S/U elections this semester.
  • Most departments have limits on the number of credits (if any) that can be counted for major and minor requirements if taken S/U.  For this semester, some departments have implemented S/U policy exceptions for major and minor requirements.  Please see the comprehensive list of these exceptions online for further details.
  • Courses taken S/U in the Spring 2020 semester do not count toward the 14-credit hour maximum for undergraduate students.
  • For this semester, you can request the S/U grading option even if you have an account hold for a balance due.

Incompletes

The grade of Incomplete, which gives the student time after the semester has concluded to complete course requirements, may be reported by an instructor under the following circumstances:

  1. The student has requested an Incomplete.
  2. Course requirements have not been completed for reasons beyond the student’s control (e.g., illness or family emergency).
  3. The student has completed the majority of the work for the class, and the student can accomplish the remaining requirements without further registration.

After consulting with your course instructor, please complete this form no later than finals week to begin this process.  You will need to login with your campus computer account username and password.

Normally, the conditions for changing the grade of “Incomplete” to a final grade must be met by the end of the next regular semester following issuance of the grade.  Exceptions can be made under appropriate circumstances.  “Incompletes” not completed by the appropriate time will automatically be converted to 0.0, “U” or “U*”, depending upon the student’s choice of grading option or the designation of the course at the time of the original registration.

Emergency Withdrawals

Students needing to request an Emergency Withdrawal from one, some, or all their Spring 2020 classes, due to issues relating to the pandemic or other emergency, will need to complete this form or contact the Crane Dean’s Office (for Crane majors).  Emergency Withdrawals can be requested up until the final day of the semester (Friday, 5/15/20 at 11:59 p.m.) and may require documentation of your emergency situation.
