Assistant Professor: Music Business Coordinator & Violin
Drawing on experience in music, management, technology, and education, Dr. Timothy Yip connects classroom learning with professional practice and helps students develop the skills, experience, and perspective needed to build careers in the music and creative industries. He teaches music business, entrepreneurship, arts administration, and career development at SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music.
Dr. Yip is committed to providing students with opportunities to apply their learning beyond the classroom. He has presented educational sessions at The NAMM Show in Anaheim, California, and was selected as a CMS/NAMM Faculty Fellow. His community arts work has included developing projects supported by SLC Arts involving music performance, instrument building, outreach to children, and community engagement, reflecting a longstanding commitment to music education, mentorship, and youth development. At SUNY Potsdam, he is also the recipient of the Outstanding Faculty Mentorship of Undergraduate Research Award.
Prior to joining Crane, Dr. Yip founded and directed an award-winning violin studio and worked across the music, technology, and education sectors. His professional experience includes leadership roles in game software development, work with arts organizations such as the San Jose Youth Symphony and California Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, and management of performing ensembles, freelance music groups, and community arts initiatives. As an entrepreneur, educator, and performing artist, he brings real-world experience from multiple sectors of the creative economy into the classroom.
Dr. Yip holds a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and an MBA from San Jose State University. He has also completed entrepreneurship studies through Berklee Online and Harvard Business School Online. His educational background includes studies at UCLA, Indiana University, and the St. Petersburg State Conservatory. His teaching helps students turn their creative interests into sustainable and meaningful careers.
