Normally, required music courses must be taken for a number grade, with students earning at least 2.0 for the course to count as a passing grade. Due to the COVID crisis and the challenges facing students, the Crane School of Music has adjusted policies around counting S/P/U grades for their undergraduate majors and minors, with a grade of S required for the course to count for the degree requirement.
For the Spring 2021 semester, music majors may elect to S/P/U required music courses.
To request S/P/U grading for a required music course, students must email Dianne Chappell, the Associate Dean’s secretary, with their name, P#, and the course information (subject code, course number, section number, course name, and CRN).
If requesting to S/P/U more than two courses, please also include a petition explaining the exceptional reason (beyond simply the move to online instruction) for the request.
The deadline for requesting the S/P/U grade is the same as the college deadline for S/P/U, May 14, 2021.
Note that:
- if you want to S/P/U a non-music courses, go to the Registrar’s website
- to earn the grade of “Satisfactory” (S) requires students receive at least a 2.0 in the class
- once the S/U grading option is chosen, you cannot change you grading back to numerical grading
- faculty are unaware if a student is being graded S/U when reporting grades; the number grade they report is converted by the Registrar’s Office into the appropriate letter grade;
- to be named to the President’s List or Dean’s List students must have completed at least 12 numerically graded undergraduate credit hours for the semester.
