Lambda Alpha Honor Society

Applications for students who meet criteria are sent out in February.

Criteria:

  • Anthropology and/or Archaeological Studies Major
  • Must be declared by the prior fall semester
  • Must have 12 credits in Anthropology
  • Must have 28 credits overall at SUNY Potsdam
  • Must have attended 2 semesters at SUNY Potsdam
  • Must have CUM GPA of at least 3.5 AND min. GPA in Anthropology of at least 3.5

The Scott Powell Memorial Scholarship

This award, which honors the late Scott Powell, an Archaeological Studies major, has been made possible through the generosity of his family, the SUNY Potsdam Anthropology Club, the SUNY Potsdam Student Government Association, the Anthropology and History departments, and many individual donors. The award provides a scholarship for participation in an archaeology field school. Students are chosen through an application process conducted in early spring.

The Steven J. Marqusee Archaeological Studies Award

This award is presented to the senior archaeological studies major who has produced the most professional example of archaeological original research and/or writing.  The award has been recently named in honor of retiring Dean of Arts & Sciences Steve Marqusee, whose teaching and leadership has shaped our archaeology and anthropology programs since 1976. A certificate and book constitute the award, which is given by the Archaeological Studies faculty.

The Thomas and Elizabeth Omohundro Anthropology Scholarship

This award, made possible through the generosity of John and Susan Omohundro in commemoration of his parents, honors an Anthropology major.Students are chosen through an application process conducted in early spring on the basis of academic merit and financial need, with preference given to rising juniors.Scholarship is given for one year, if same student qualifies, they will be awarded the following year also.

Cheryl McMartin Memorial Award

The Cheryl McMartin Memorial Award is named in honor of one of our brightest anthropology/education certification students, who died tragically in March 1995.The award, which carries a small cash prize, honors the student who has shown commitment to teaching as evidenced by work in the department as a teaching assistant, a laboratory assistant, or tutor, or whose career plans include teaching at the university level.
