Editorial Internship

Organization

Blueline Magazine of the Adirondacks
120 Morey Hall / State University of New York at Potsdam

About the Organization

The soon-to-be Editor-in-Chief Sara Cantwell and Fiction Editor Dr. Donald McNutt lead interns through the process of creating and publishing Blueline magazine. Working together with all the editors behind the scenes, interns assist with crucial decision-making about the magazine’s design and content to create the finished product.

Duties

The internship requires one to read through various materials and explore websites and digital platforms to understand how the organization advertises, creates, and publishes the magazine. Meetings usually run for two hours out of one day of the week, with assignments to read and/or explore materials outside of said times. The meetings themselves consist of coming together for lengthy discussions about how the magazine operates, how submissions are assessed, marketing, networking, and Blueline’s audience. The internship is unpaid; however, funding is available through the LoCAL upon application for compensation.

Summary

The editorial internship at Blueline has given me valuable insights into how a magazine operates, equipping me with the tools I’ll need to succeed as a writer. The discussions we had about adapting to the expansion of digital media and how it has changed the way Blueline markets/advertises were invaluable. Working with this group has also improved my ability to assess literature and provided me with skills that I will translate into my own writing career. This has been a wonderful experience, and I hope to continue working with these folks moving forward.
