Internships and Service Learning

The Advanced Honors requirements may be fulfilled by an honors internship or service-learning experience. To count as "Honors Quality" these experiences must include one or both of the following attributes:

  1. Activities (e.g., related research, supplementary reading, writing, or reporting assignments, a journal component; enhanced responsibility on-site) beyond the scope of a traditional internship or service-learning experience.

  2. A written or oral presentation reflecting on the student's previous course work as it relates to the ideals and practice of civic responsibility.

Advanced Honors Internship is designed to integrate disciplinary knowledge with application in the student's field of study (12 credits maximum):

  • An Honors internship contract is negotiated by the student, a faculty sponsor, a work-site supervisor, the director of the Office of Experiential Education, and the Honors Director.
  • The internship should include 40 clock hours of direct on-site involvement per credit hour awarded. Students must also complete a program of readings related to the internship project.
  • Regular conferences with the site supervisor and the faculty mentor, as well as a final integrative project (e.g., action research, literature review, program design), will be required.
In most cases, the student will also keep a reflective journal throughout the experience.
  • At the completion of the internship, the student, faculty mentor and site supervisor should meet to discuss outcomes and what the student learned from the experience. Internship completion will be monitored through the Office of Experiential Education and the faculty sponsor, in accordance with established College policy.
  • The faculty sponsor must notify the Honors Director, in writing (email is fine), of the student's satisfactory completion of the Advanced Honors internship. The Honors Director will in turn notify the Registrar's Office of the student's completion of the Advanced Honors project through an internship.

Honors Quality Service Learning Experience:

  • This option runs much like the Internship option discussed above, and emphasizes a service-learning contract. The student's application must follow the internship model laid out above.
  • Principal parties to the service-learning contract will be the Honors student, her or his faculty sponsor, a site supervisor, the Director of the Office of Experiential Education and the Honors Director.
  • The faculty sponsor must notify the Honors Director, in writing (email is fine), of satisfactory completion of the Advanced Honors service-learning experience. The Honors Director will in turn notify the Registrar's Office of the student's completion of the Advanced Honors project through service-learning.
