Western Tanzania is home to some of Africa’s most diverse yet understudied ecosystems. This talk explores the journey of establishing a long-term wildlife ecology and conservation research program in Katavi National Park, beginning with field reconnaissance and collaboration with Tanzanian wildlife experts and institutions. Using camera traps and other ecological approaches, the research aims to document wildlife diversity, understand mammal communities and carnivore prey relationships, and generate baseline information for species of conservation concern, including lions and endangered African wild dogs. The program also creates opportunities for student involvement, local collaboration, and research that can directly support wildlife conservation and management. Katavi National Park is only the beginning - a starting point for a broader vision of understanding and conserving the remarkable Katavi National Park and the surrounding landscape.
