SUNY Potsdam President Congratulates Janey Richards ’73 Upon Receiving 50,000th Dose of COVID-19 Vaccine at Site Hosted on Campus

Mary Johnson, a registered nurse from Ogdensburg, prepares a Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine at SUNY Potsdam’s Maxcy Hall Field House—the site of one of New York State’s vaccination clinics.

This morning, the 50,000th shot was administered by the healthcare heroes working at the New York State vaccination site located in SUNY Potsdam’s Maxcy Hall Fieldhouse. It just happened to be an alumna of the College!

SUNY Potsdam President Kristin G. Esterberg dropped by this morning to thank all those working at the site and surprised Janey Richards ’73, a retired educator from Heuvelton, N.Y., with a little gift from her alma mater. The submitted photo is with members of the healthcare team and the New York Army National Guard unit working day and night at the site.

Christopher Sikkens, New York Army National Guard (Potsdam, NY) and Jeff Green, pharmacist (Ogdensburg, NY).

Chancellor Jim Malatras issued a statement upon the milestone being reached, saying: “SUNY Potsdam has been a leader in serving its community as a vaccination site, and today they have administered more than 50,000 doses of the lifesaving COVID-19 vaccine. And now as New York State has opened up eligibility for more New Yorkers to receive their doses, we know that SUNY Potsdam will continue to rise to the occasion. I congratulate SUNY Potsdam President Kristin Esterberg and her team for reaching this milestone, and I thank them for all of their hard work in helping our state win the battle against COVID-19.”

Nurses are now administering approximately 2,000 vaccines a day in the Maxcy Hall Fieldhouse—with staff available to assist with registration upon arrival, observe patients for any adverse reactions and help those with accessibility needs.
