SUNY Potsdam was recently selected for membership in the FirstGen Forward Network, a national community of practice dedicated to advancing success for first-generation college students. Potsdam was one of 60 new members announced for 2025-26 nationwide.

To be selected as a FirstGen Forward Network member, SUNY Potsdam displayed a demonstrated commitment to improving experiences and advancing success for first-generation college students.

“We are extremely honored to be selected as a member of the FirstGen Forward Network. As we continue to strengthen student supports and services, our campus affirms a commitment to first-generation students and the families and communities who support them,” said SUNY Potsdam Vice President for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Dr. Jacqueline Richardson-Melecio.

The FirstGen Forward Network provides a three-phase framework designed to help institutions scale holistic first-generation student success, transforming the student experience, strengthening academic and co-curricular outcomes, and building inclusive institutional structures. Since its launch, 489 institutions—including two statewide systems—have joined the Network, spanning 49 states and the District of Columbia.

“We are pleased to welcome The State University of New York at Potsdam into the FirstGen Forward Network,” said Dr. Martina Martin, vice president with FirstGen Forward. “Through the application process, it was clear that SUNY Potsdam is not only committed to supporting first-generation students, but also prepared to invest in long-term, strategic efforts that create environments where these students can truly thrive.”

As a FirstGen Forward institution, SUNY Potsdam will benefit from shared learning opportunities, evidence based strategies, and collaboration with peer campuses committed to improving outcomes for firstgeneration students.

“Firstgeneration students bring extraordinary talent, resilience, and perspective to our campus, and SUNY Potsdam is committed to ensuring they have every opportunity to succeed. Joining the FirstGen Forward Network strengthens our ability to align resources, expand programming and advance long term strategies that support student belonging and achievement. We are honored to be in good company with universities from across the nation as we pursue these goals," said SUNY Potsdam President Dr. Suzanne R. Smith.

To advance these goals on campus, the SUNY Potsdam First Generation Planning Committee—representing a cross-section of faculty and staff from multiple departments—will convene on  April 3 to discuss the service and support needs of first-generation students, and to identify opportunities to expand awareness, resources and connections across campus and in the broader community.

As part of this work, the committee will begin planning a  First-Gen Orientation program, set  to launch in  Fall 2026. This tailored program is funded through a grant from SUNY’s Office of University Life and Student Affairs, and will reflect the shared goal of helping first-generation students feel welcomed, prepared and supported from day one.

Institutions join the Network through a competitive application process. During the first year, Network Members engage in monthly workshops, peer learning opportunities, and professional development sessions while contributing to a nationwide knowledge-sharing community. Members can progress to Network Leader status and ultimately achieve Network Champion designation by demonstrating a measurable impact and sustained commitment to the success of first-generation students.

“Being selected as a FirstGen Forward Network Member is both an honor and a call to action,” said Dr. Stephanie Bannister, president of FirstGen Forward.
“SUNY Potsdam joins a growing movement of institutions and professionals who are committed to advancing access, sharing best practices, and driving systemic change to ensure first-generation students succeed. We look forward to seeing SUNY Potsdam and the entire Class of 2025 make a lasting impact.”
