The Chuck Lorre Family Foundation Announces Second $1 Million Gift for Student Success Initiative at SUNY Potsdam
Chuck Lorre visits the SUNY Potsdam campus in September 2024. The legendary television producer is doubling down on his original $1 million gift to his alma mater, giving another $1 million to support the College’s Student Success Initiative.
The State University of New York at Potsdam has received a second $1 million gift from The Chuck Lorre Family Foundation—doubling down on the renowned television producer’s original surprise gift to his alma mater.
Chuck Lorre ’74 shocked and delighted a full concert hall of students, alumni, employees and community members at SUNY Potsdam during his 2024 campus visit, when he pulled a $1 million check out of his pocket and presented it to President Dr. Suzanne R. Smith on the Hosmer Hall stage following a public talk.
That gift, bestowed from his namesake family foundation, became the cornerstone of SUNY Potsdam’s Student Success Initiative, catalyzing further philanthropic support and bolstering the campus’s efforts to help students thrive academically and personally.
“With this gift, I hope even more students can take advantage of the safe environment SUNY Potsdam offers, so they can learn and grow as a person—just like I did. I have been so impressed with what the campus has been able to achieve with the first gift, and look forward to the impact of this new commitment," Lorre said.
Now, thanks to the Lorre Foundation’s new investment of another $1 million to the Potsdam College Foundation, SUNY Potsdam will be able to increase support for its First Year Experience, the Bridges program and its professional advising center. The Student Success Initiative at SUNY Potsdam is designed to improve retention, enhance career prospects and increase social mobility, based on proven programming and proactive support.
“Chuck Lorre’s extraordinary generosity continues to transform the student experience at SUNY Potsdam,” said President Dr. Suzanne R. Smith. “This second $1 million investment is not only a powerful vote of confidence in our mission—it is a life-changing commitment to our students. Through his support, we are expanding the programs and personalized guidance that help our students persist, graduate and succeed far beyond their time on campus. We are deeply grateful to Chuck and The Lorre Family Foundation for their unwavering belief in Potsdam and in the potential of every student we serve.”
Chuck Lorre created, co-created and executive produced: “The Big Bang Theory,” “Young Sheldon,” “Two and a Half Men,” “Mike & Molly,” “Mom,” “The Kominsky Method,” “Bookie,” “Bob Hearts Abishola,” “Cybill,” “Dharma & Greg,” “Grace Under Fire,” “Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage,” and the theme song to “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.” His newest production, “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe,” debuts on HBO Max in July.
Lorre is also the founder of The Chuck Lorre Family Foundation, which is dedicated to funding innovative and compassionate organizations in the areas of education, health, and the arts. Reflecting the values and unique experiences of the Lorre family, the foundation supports programs, services, and opportunities for those struggling with less and striving for more.
