Jonathan Ryan to Present 19th Annual Ranlett Organ Recital for CPS on Oct. 14

October 9, 2018

Organist Jonathan Ryan will perform the 19th annual Ranlett Organ Recital for the Community Performance Series on Sunday, Oct. 14 at 3 p.m., in Hosmer Hall at The Crane School of Music.

The Community Performance Series will continue its 29th season with an upcoming performance featuring one of today’s best young concert organists, Jonathan Ryan.

The 19th annual Ranlett Organ Recital will be presented on Sunday, Oct. 14 at 3 p.m., in the Helen M. Hosmer Concert Hall at SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music. A free organ encounter will also take place the day before, on Saturday, Oct. 13, also at 3 p.m. in Hosmer Hall.

For the Oct. 14 performance, Ryan will perform compositions from Bach, Sweelinck, Vivaldi, Sowerby, Moore, Wammes, Schumann and Guilmant.

Acclaimed as “one of the brightest younger artists in the field today”, Jonathan Ryan consistently elicits praise for his “depth of musicianship, imagination and passion” (The Diapason). His command of an exceptionally large breadth of repertoire enables his bold, imaginative programming and exceptional use of each organ’s unique capability, for which he is celebrated. Especially concerned with communicating a work’s essence, he is known for his ability to captivate listeners.

Ryan has the rare distinction of holding six first prize awards from major international and national organ competitions. He most notably entered the international spotlight when he was awarded both first prize and the only auxiliary prize, the LeTourneau Concerto Prize, in the 2009 Jordan II International Organ Competition.

Born into a musical family in Charlotte, N.C., Ryan first started playing the organ at age eight. He holds degrees from the Cleveland Institute of Music and the Eastman School of Music, as well as the revered Fellow and Choirmaster certifications from the American Guild of Organists.

Ryan serves as director of music and organist at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in Dallas, Texas, where his passions for conducting, performing and teaching combine with his love of sacred music, at the nation's second largest Episcopal church. At St. Michael, he directs the adult choirs, oversees a growing chorister program, established the professional Compline Choir, and heads the “Saint Michael Presents” concert series. He most recently served as associate director of music at one of the Episcopal Church's largest music programs at Christ Church in Greenwich, Conn. Among Christ Church’s nine choirs, he directed the adult choir in choral Masses and concerts, and assisted with the Choir of Men & Boys and the Girls’ Choir.
