SUNY Potsdam Professor of Art Marc Leuthold will exhibit works he created during a prestigious residency in China as part of Asia Week New York 2018. The ceramics professor will exhibit his new pieces at Throckmorton Fine Art in New York City, in conjunction with the upcoming annual citywide celebration of Asian art, which kicks off on March 15.

Leuthold created the artworks in China last year, after winning a large prize from the Blanc de Chine International Ceramic Art Competition, an award that allowed him to exhibit at the Musée des Confluences in Lyons, France, and complete a three-month residency at the Wanqi Art Center in Dehua, China.

Leuthold is excited to share his artwork and his experiences, both with his students at SUNY Potsdam and with gallery visitors.

“It was a great honor to learn from the Chinese masters who benefit from the Chinese art culture of 5,000 years’ duration. I was treated with great respect and was thereby able to learn and grow both as an artist and person. I never will forget the kindness of my Chinese hosts, and it is exciting to share what I have learned with my Potsdam students. Their enthusiasm, interest and energy are what makes teaching at SUNY Potsdam so rewarding,” Leuthold said.

Founded in 1980, Throckmorton Fine Art is located at 145 E. 57th St. in New York City. Leuthold’s works will be on view alongside the gallery’s Sui-Tang Buddhist Sculpture Exhibition. For gallery hours and more information, visit http://www.throckmorton-nyc.com.

The Blanc de Chine International Ceramic Art Award was established in 2016. It is a residency program that unearths, selects, develops and exhibits world-class ceramic artists, and establishes for both Western and Chinese ceramic artists a platform based on the reality of their respective cultures. Through the medium of ceramics, the prize seeks to build upon participants’ strengths, creating works of both creativity and innovation. It seeks also to raise the international profile of Dehua White Porcelain, an art form with a long and distinguished history, while also leading innovation in the field of ceramics. About the artist:

Marc Leuthold’s sculptures have entered the collections of the Metropolitan and Brooklyn Museums and the Museum of Art and Design. Critic John Perreault has remarked: “One looks and looks for artists who break up history, who bend the descent, who force one to connect the dots in new ways, even turn away from some. Leuthold is one of these.” The son of European immigrants, Leuthold is interested in cross-cultural experiences. His work reflects the influence of the arts of Asia, Africa and the Mediterranean. Leuthold is a professor of art at SUNY Potsdam and has taught at Princeton University and the Parsons School of Design. He is one of 40 Americans who is an elected lifetime member of the International Academy of Ceramics.
