The Lougheed Center for Applied Learning’s Kilmer Labs Program seeks to expand opportunities for undergraduate and graduate research experiences by funding SUNY Potsdam’s faculty members’ research projects. Kilmer Labs generally take the form of team-based inquiries and span a range of academic disciplines, from sciences, social sciences, to the humanities and the arts. In return for financial assistance, faculty awardees commit to employ and mentor a specified number of students as research assistants over the term of the award. Lougheed Center for Applied Learning staff provide programmatic support for students’ academic growth and career readiness, as well as project development and promotion.
Guidelines
Updated: May 21, 2025 by Sarah Lister & Tom Baker
Max funding per year $4500
$500 per term, per student engaged in Kilmer Lab
Terms: fall, spring, summer
Housing: While the project is active, the Kilmer program will pay for up to three students’ summer housing costs. If the student is living off-campus and paying rent, they may invoice the LoCAL for an amount less than or equal to the cost of on-campus housing. The faculty member must notify the LoCAL Director by the end of final exam week in the spring semester.
Apply for conference travel funding through the Lougheed Applied Learning Grants.
Paying students: if no other funding is available to compensate students, the faculty member may work with the LoCAL to identify a financial source for a summer stipend. Summer stipends are not guaranteed for students. Faculty members must organize a consultation with the LoCAL Director & Director of Undergraduate Research.

Kilmer Labs is an initiative to expand research opportunities for undergraduates by supporting faculty research ‘lab’ projects (usually team-based in format). Faculty members agree to sponsor and employ a certain number of student research assistants over the term of the grant.
