Exploring the Barriers and Latino Experience in K-12 Music Education
With my project, titled “Exploring the Barriers and Latino Experience in K-12 Music Education”, I hope to increase the accessibility of music education among Latino students in K-12 settings. Growing up a child of Costa Rican immigrants in a community rich with diversity, I was surprised to notice the lack of Latino representation in the same musical spaces I was in. As I grew up, I noticed more and more how my community was underrepresented in larger orchestral and band settings. Through a process of interviewing and research, I seek to get to the root of the issue, and explore how we as K-12 educators can promote and expand diversity in our classrooms. Together, we can foster a supportive environment, and continue to encourage and increase diversity in our greater music industry.
