B.A. in Creative Writing
The Creative Writing Major hones students’ abilities to write and think imaginatively and critically. Students select workshops in creative nonfiction, drama, fiction, poetry, and screenwriting and learn strategies for crafting original expression while courses in literary study further allow them to contextualize their art.
Outcomes
Students will be able to:
- demonstrate competence to write and/or speak clearly in a variety of frameworks and genres.
- demonstrate the ability to think critically, creatively, and/or construct coherent arguments using claims and reasons supported by credible sources.
- demonstrate drafting, editing, and publishing skills and practices of a writer and critic.
- participate in writing activities that support the campus, local, and greater writing community through their work and various literary arts activities.

Some occupations related to creative writing are projected to grow 4 to 14 percent in the next 10 years.

Community of Practice
Sara Cantwell '14 & '17 discovered her passion for storytelling right here at SUNY Potsdam. Today, she's helping students find their own creative voices as a lecturer in the Department of English. From her role as coordinator of the B.A. in Creative Writing program to editor-in-Chief of “Blueline” magazine, Cantwell provides her students with mentorship and applied learning experiences while emphasizing a sense of community.

Motherhood and Education
As she handles the responsibilities of marriage and motherhood, Elizabeth Criscitello ’22 has faced the challenges of adulthood much quicker than many of her classmates. Engaged at the end of freshman year, married the following year, and then giving birth to her baby, Giovanna, in the spring of 2020, she has continued to balance parenting with her educational goals as she pursues dual degrees in English writing and community health.

Storytelling in the Wild
When he’s not carving through the fresh powder at Alpine Meadows in Lake Tahoe, Mike Rogge leads a successful career as the editor of The Ski Journal and the founder/owner of the media production company, Verb Cabin. Since graduating with his degree in writing and literature from SUNY Potsdam over a decade ago, Rogge has turned his dream into a reality—skiing as many days as possible and writing about it professionally.
